Switzerland 1-0 Cameroon- Breel Embolo secures Swiss win

Switzerland beat Cameroon to open Group G. This was the first ever fixture between the two sides. Switzerland are competing in their 12th World Cup and are hoping to replicate their Euro 2020 form where they knocked out reigning World Cup champions France in the Round of 16. Cameroon are playing in their eight World Cup which is the most from any African side. Cameroon qualified by beating Algeria in the 120th minute and securing their place on away goals.

Switzerland held Cameroon to a 1-0 win with Cameroon born Breel Embolo scoring for the Swiss. Switzerland provided most of the possession throughout the game but in the first half Cameroon created the better of the chances.

A front three of Toko Ekambi , Brentford's Mbeumo and Choupo-Moting caused problems, which Switzerland dealt with. Sommer made a few saves but nothing that feared the experienced goalie. Akanji ended the first half with Switzerland's best chance, a header from a Vargas corner which glanced wide of the far post leaving Cameroon hearts in their mouths.

Not long after Half-Time Switzerland took the lead. Freuler threaded a ball through the passing lanes to Shaqiri on the right, who then was composed enough to produce a low driven cut back to Embolos feet who fired home. Embolo didn't celebrate as he was born in Cameroon. Big respect. From here on out the games tempo and momentum fizzled out apart from a minute where three chances occur.

Napoli midfielder Zambo Anguissa had a header saved by Sommer. Switzerland hit on the counter where Onana produce a strong save to deny a Vargas power shot from close range. Following that save a corner was whipped in at the back stick. Zambo Anguissa toed the baller away stopping a certain Embolo brace.

Switzerland comfortable saw the game out keeping the ball and creating very little chances. Cameroon subbed off Toko Ekambi and Choupo-Moting which took away all their attacking threat.

The result leaves Switzerland on 3 points and in good momentum to play favourite Brazil on Monday. For Cameroon this result means they will need at least a point against Serbia to then have a chance of qualifying on game week 3. A loss will see the African side crash out.
