Former Cameroon international George Elokobi's verdict on Cameroon’s and England’s World Cup fate

Former Wolves and Cameroon defender George Elokobi has given his say on the World Cup. He talks all things Cameroon, England, and his players to keep an eye on in Qatar.

Elokobi explained how Cameroon have every chance of going all the way, despite a 1-0 loss to Switzerland in their first fixture of Group G.

The loss was courtesy of a second half Breel Embolo strike for Switzerland, but the striker didn’t celebrate as Cameroon was his country of birth, the first time ever this has happened in a World Cup.

“Cameroon have got a 100% chance of winning the World Cup,” George said, “Like every other team, they’ve already earned their way to Qatar through qualifying.”

George highlighted the strike force as a key area of Cameroon’s national team: “The whole team is important, but some of the key Cameroon players are Choupo-Moting, he’s a Bayern Munich player who can score a lot of goals.” The 33-year-old has 8 goal involvements in 10 games in the Bundesliga this season and comes into this World Cup on form.

“Vincent Aboubakar is also striker who can surprise you on his day and is a match-winner. He will be crucial if Cameroon progress.” The experienced striker has 33 goals in his Cameroon career.

“Remember, it’s not just them two, there are 11 players on the pitch and every player has to do a job for the team.”

England, who have 4 points from their opening two games, “Are a footballing country, they have exceptional players, and have 100% chance of winning the World Cup.”

The former Wolves man knows top level football very well, having played 58 Premier League games for The Wanderers, even scoring at Old Trafford! He described: “England are equipped with quality in every position.”

Harry Kane usually gets plaudits for his performances in an England shirt, and George also sees him as a key asset: “Kane is obviously one to look out for, he has proven so many times that he can score goals.”

Harry Kane comes into this tournament with 12 goals from 15 games in the Premier League, which are outstanding numbers for the Spurs frontman.

The defender nicknamed “The Beast” by Wolves fans, said England’s team has goals in every position.

“England’s squad is full of talent. Exciting players like Jude Bellingham, Raheem Sterling and Mason Mount all play at a top level and provide value to the England team.”

“Harry Maguire is even a threat from set pieces, England have goals in every position.”

George Elokobi clearly believes that both Cameroon and England can push far into the competition and have “100% chance” if they use their attacking outlets properly.

Vincent Aboubakar, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling were just a few of the names put forward who are key assets to their countries this Winter.
